Job Listings Hint at Spotify's Foray into the Smart Speaker Market
Spotify is undoubtedly one of the best music subscription services out at that place on the market. The visitor has over 70 million worldwide paid subscribers, and it works just fine on most hardware products. But it looks like that'due south not enough for the company.
Spotify appears to exist working on a smart speaker or a connected speaker of its own, equally per job listings posted on its official website, the visitor is working on a "category-defining" product, and it is looking to rent an operations manager. The job list says, "Spotify is on its mode to creating its start concrete products and set upwardly an operational organisation for manufacturing, supply chain, sales, and marketing."
The news comes hot on the heels of Apple's HomePod launch, which doesn't have native support Spotify. Although it works through Airdrop, Spotify would non be happy about the lack of native support, especially when devices with Google's Banana and Alexa are capable of doing that.
As the folks over at The Guardian pointed out, Spotify's chore listing for "operations managing director," "senior product manager: hardware production" and "project manager: hardware product and engineering," suggests that the company is ready to get-go manufacturing soon.
That being said, it remains to be seen if Spotify's smart speaker would support Alexa, Google Assistant or both – we can rule out a Siri-powered speaker as that would exist decidedly unlike Apple. However, it is indeed quite a surprising movement by Spotify to pace into a saturated market and go head-to-head with at least one of its biggest partners.
